Why do people use homeopathy?

Homeopathy is the second most widely used system of medicine in the world and is only now starting to increase in popularity in Australia. It is well known in the United Kingdom, Europe and India. There are even homeopathic hospitals in the United Kingdom.

Homeopathy is a natural form of medicine that prompts your body to restore balance and heal itself. It can be used alone for a wide range of physical and emotional conditions and can be a useful addition or complement with other medical treatments.

What can homeopathy do for me?

We treat the person and a result improvement can be experienced physically, emotionally and mentally. Homeopathic treatment can improve the immune system, provide long term relief from symptoms and reduce the reoccurrence of health problems. Many people experience an increased feeling of wellbeing and energy levels along with significant improvement in their symptoms.

Who can use homeopathy?

Anyone and everyone can use homeopathy, from newborn babies to the elderly.

Do I need to follow a special diet or take supplements?

Usually there is no need to follow a special diet or take supplements during homeopathic treatment. Our remedies have an indirect effect on eating and nutrition which improves digestion and absorption of vitamins and minerals. Some people even notice that unhealthy cravings and habits diminish while taking a homeopathic remedy. On the other hand, sometimes a lifestyle or dietary habit can interfere with the action of the remedy. In these cases you would be given some suggestions to follow so that treatment is more effective.

What can I expect during a consultation with a homeopath?

Your first consultation with a homeopath can last up to 90 minutes. During a consultation we take the time to learn about you, your symptoms and most importantly how they are affecting you. A homeopathic medicine is then prescribed to individually match your physical, mental and emotional symptoms.

How long will it take to get results?

Results are very individual and will depend on what condition you are being treated for. We always start with the lowest possible dose to effect a positive change and gradually increase the dose to accelerate improvement. For chronic conditions, some people will notice an improvement from the very first dose, some people will notice results within weeks and others it may take several months. It is important to remember that the remedy is stimulating the body to do its own healing which is why improvement can faster than expected or slower than expected. It is the overall effect that is more important than the speed at which it happens. For acute conditions results can be immediate and usually resolve within 12 to 24 hours and you will be encouraged to see your medical adviser if symptoms are severe or if they persist longer than 24 hours.

How often will I need to see a homeopath?

It is recommended that you make a follow up appointment in two weeks after your first appointment. This is so we can assess your response to the remedy and make any necessary adjustments to your dose. After that you might like to make a monthly appointment until your health issues have resolved. You are also encouraged to contact me if you feel your dose needs to be increased or decreased so that any dosage adjustments can be made in between visits.

How often do I need to take homeopathic medicine?

This can range anywhere from once a day to once a week depending on the focus of treatment. The medicine is very simple to take and most people like the taste.

You will be advised to decrease the frequency of the dose as your symptoms improve. Unlike most conventional medicines, with homeopathy more is not better. Once your symptoms are significantly improved you will be advised to stop taking the medicine and only take it when you feel your symptoms are starting to return.

How long do the results last after homeopathic treatment?

You can expect long term results with homeopathic treatment. Some people may experience symptom relief for several months, years or decades after homeopathic treatment. Clinical experience has shown that people may need a repeat dose during times of prolonged stress. If you experience a relapse in your symptoms after a period of long term relief then it is time to make another appointment.

What about side effects?

The risk of side effects during homeopathic treatment is minimal.

Occasionally some people notice a temporary increase in their symptoms for a day or so after taking a remedy. If this happens it is a good sign that the remedy is working and most people will experience improvement afterwards.

What is the difference between Homeopathy and Naturopathy?

Naturopathy aims to treat a person with herbs, supplements and nutrition and is very effective for health issues caused by lifestyle factors. Some naturopaths may use homeopathic remedies but it is important to note that homeopathy is a specialist field and a separate qualification is required to practice and be registered as a homeopath with the Australian Register of Homeopaths (AROH).

Homeopathy aims to treat the whole person by stimulating the immune system to come back into balance and in the process symptoms will settle down and resolve.  It can be effective for health issues that have not responded to lifestyle changes. The medicine is usually included in the consultation fee.

Should I stop taking my prescription medication in order to use homeopathy?

No. You should continue to take your prescription medication until you have an opportunity to consult your medical practitioner. If you experience any improvement while taking your homeopathic medicine please consult your medical practitioner about adjusting the dose of your prescription medication. Homeopathic medicine does not interact with conventional medicines as both are working on different levels of the body.

Is it okay to take naturopathic herbs or Chinese herbs with homeopathic medicine?

Please let your homeopath know if you are taking these especially if they have been prescribed by a naturopath or acupuncturist. The requirements for these can change if homeopathic treatment is effective.
